UKIP. Who would vote for them?

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/election_2010/8631146.stm

This bbc interview is journalism at its finest. It simply allows the interviewee to discard and destroy what little dignity he may have had prior to commencement, however not through the use of tactical ploys or virulent scandal, but with good use of his sheer stupidity.

I find it somewhat disconcerting to say the least that Lord Pearson, a peer in the House of Lords, has the utterly outrageous ignorance that allows him to insult an entire religion with such an air of bad taste and disrespect.

Now let me clarify, I am not a completely adamant supporter of the Burka, however, neither am I a person to deny another the right to do what they want and wear what they want. Particularly when considering a way of life that I know nothing about.

However, it is not UKIP’s policy that I find so infuriating, it is the way in which Lord Pearson adds insult to injury by using a tone and manner lacking in any decency.

‘Providing they can’t be dsicovered putting the cross in the wrong place according to their men folk’

Now I’m sorry but is he honestly referring to the Muslims of Britain as some sort of hunter gatherer tribe?!

Not only are his words in my opinion derogatory and rude, but they also undermine the rights and minds of women and furthermore the British democratic process.

URGH.

That is all.

And so it begins…

What an interesting topic to begin a blog with!

It cannot be denied that tonight has made history but perhaps it has also made the upcoming election accessible and engaging for a nation that has become more and more disengaged with the tomfoolery of Westminster.

The biggest impression of the night that I’m sure many would agree with was the rise of the underdog. Clegg was confident, direct, honest and according to Alan Johnson ‘won the battle for style’. That he did.

Cameron and Brown fought tirelessly using the same old rigmarole and repetitive campaign lines which only increased favourability towards Clegg who attacked both parties whilst they argued amongst themselves.

Perhaps something which won’t be repeated in the coming debates will be resignation to many of Clegg’s attacks which left Cameron in particular looking strangely weak for his usual bravado. As for Brown, his continual attempts to match Lib Dem ideas to those of Labour and vice versa backfired to a point where it just seemed like a spur of the moment statement lacking any substance.

To summate:

Cameron:

- ‘predominantly elected House of Lords’ correction the people want an ENTIRELY elected House of Lords, out with all the hereditary lords rubbish!

- ‘Iran and China’ ahemm!! Mr Cameron, not a very wise conclusion to draw considering that you could potentially be in power within weeks and face to face with the Chinese counterparts you so readily just considered in the same light as a country assumed by many as the greatest nuclear threat to the Western world!!

Brown:

- Cheesy

- Cheap shots (the airbrushing quip.. AGAIN.) Gordon we have heard just about all jokes relating to this topic in the last couple of weeks, be done with it, it is boring and completely unoriginal.

- Repetitive.

Clegg:

- Mostly impressive, however, there could be room for improvement on the question of Trident which it was probably felt by some wasn’t addressed with aspects to alternatives or actual Lib Dem reasoning on the subject.

Although we concern ourselves with and often get wrapped up in the personalities, I believe it important to give credit to the impact tonight has had on public debate. The online forums were buzzing throughout the evening bringing people together and discussing issues with emphasis on personal experiences and the sharing of these. From carers to army personnel, the discussions taking place were not only an insight into policies and practicalities but also life itself, and viewpoints from which many of us fail to consider.

An educational night for all, and to satisfy the nerd within, I quote Gandalf, ‘so it begins…’
